Chapel Hill Church & Cemetery

August 16, 2023

Chapel Hill church building and cemetery are located 6 miles East of San Augustine on Highway 21 in the Ford’s Corner Community. There are 227 grave sites and reserved plots in the Historic Cemetery. Recently, a Cemetery Board was formed and the Chapel and Cemetery were gifted the deed by the Texas Annual Conference. With that being said, the Cemetery Board is now responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of both. The Chapel is rarely used and is maintained because it is a “Landmark” in the community. It sits high above the road on a landscaped hill and is a place that many photographers visit because of its panoramic view. Beautiful sunsets can be captured on film from the serene environment.
After the acquisition of the Chapel and cemetery, the newly formed Board decided to hold a meeting inside the Chapel. It was then that the damage from a leaking roof was discovered. Part of the ceiling sheetrock was hanging down over the piano and the carpet was soaked. Mold had already started to show on the walls and ceiling. The Board was able to secure funds to have the roof replaced, but now the repair of the interior needs to begin.

San Augustine County is home to so many historical sites. Chapel Hill is a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark and is just another of those that require some help to maintain. Any financial help would be appreciated. Please pray about helping to maintain this landmark Chapel and cemetery. Inquiries and donations may be mailed to P O Box 18, San Augustine, Tx 75972. If you would like to see the Chapel and its current condition, you may call 936.275.6843 to request that tour. Thanking you all in advance.
