CARL O. BIRDWELL

Funeral services for Mr. Carl O. Birdwell, age 85, of San Augustine were held Tuesday, September 12, 2023 at Chinquapin Baptist Church. Burial followed in Chinquapin Cemetery. He passed from this life Friday, September 8, 2023, at his residence in San Augustine County.

Carl O. was born December 21, 1937, in San Augustine County to parents Enlow and Florence (Hardy) Birdwell and was a lifelong area resident. He married the love of his life, Helen Murray on June 7, 1958, having celebrated 65 years of marriage this year. He was a registered licensed land surveyor for over 40 years, retiring from Texas Department of Transportation with 22 years of service and then working many years in private practice, as well as farming and ranching. A strong Christian man, he served Chinquapin Baptist Church as a devoted member and deacon for 56 years.

His survivors include his wife, Helen Murray Birdwell of San Augustine County; a daughter, Carla Ladner and husband Rodney of Lufkin; son, Glen Birdwell and wife Cindy of Gaithersburg, Maryland; grandchildren, Kelli Harley and husband Justin, Brien Birdwell and wife Kelley, Lauren Morley and husband Nicholas, Kristen Ladner, Leah Mitchell and husband Ryan, Abigail Ajamian and husband John; great-grandchildren, Emma Harley, Evan Harley, Eli Harley, and Julian Mitchell; a brother, Winfred Birdwell; and a host of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sons, Dale Birdwell and Mark Birdwell; brothers, Norman Birdwell, Kennon Birdwell; sisters, Bertha Mae McMurry, Matt Breaux, Ruby Murphy, Audrey Drawhorn, and Margie Nell Hildabrant.

Pallbearers: Rodney Ladner, Brien Birdwell, Justin Harley, Nicholas Morley, Don McMurry, and John Ajamian.
